What an enjoyable little bit of fun, “Songs She Wrote About People She Knows” turned out to be. Writer/director Elgstrand captured in fantasy, and with a cheeky elegance, what many of us wished we could do in reality – address those wonderfully irritating people who are resident in our lives, with brutal honesty sharing how we really feel. And do it in song.

Arabella Bushnell (Carol) plays a reserved, quiet, methodical and precise individual who has difficulty expressing her displeasure of people who’ve offended her. It’s through an art-therapy class that Carol learns to address her annoyance through moody songs. The therapist challenges his charges not to hold on to irritation and frustration, but to release the internal stress by sharing their feelings. Carol begins sending friends and coworkers confrontational tidbits of her opinions written to morose melodies that elicit restraining orders and hostility. Ultimately, Carol makes an album of her provocative sentiments, inviting her target offenders to an Album Release party. One passing line; “Hello. We haven’t met – I’m track 4. Hi, I’m track 5.”

“Songs…” is a delightfully quiet romp through the world of personal suppression and expression. Bushnell provides a funny, dry, colorful and absorbing presence that happily brings us along in concert with her choice of sharing. ‘Songs She Wrote About people She Knows’ is not a powerful film, it is not an overly dramatic film, but it is an agreeable way to enjoy theatre, and maybe some popcorn.
