IMG_6325You may know Donnell Rawlings by a lot of different names, including Beautiful, Day-Day Price, and more infamously, Ashy Larry.

But his recent stand-up tour proves that Rawlings is a comedian that can take on any crowd, and not have to resort to his old material.

Known to many as an overnight success, Rawlings has actually been doing standup for many years in addition to his appearances on popular TV shows like Chappelle’s Show, Def Comedy Jam, Law and Order: SVU, and movies like “Spiderman 2.”
Rawlings made a stop this weekend in San Jose at the famous Improv Comedy Club, in between stops on his “Donnell Unchained” tour, to continuous sold-out crowds and tons of laughs booming from the building.

He came out into the crowd blaring French Montana’s “Ain’t Worried Bout Nothin’” and even had the audience singing and dancing along. His use of that song throughout the show will have crowd members constantly saying “ain’t worried bout nothin’” for a long time, just like Kevin Hart with his “All right all right all riiiiiight!”

Even though Rawlings was able to squeeze in his trademark lines “Take It In The Face” and “I’m Rich Biaaaatch!,” there were no old jokes, no gimmicks, just real honest raunchy comedy. The best part was the crowd participation, because there were enough interesting looking characters in the audience to get some material from. Rawlings’ ability to make a joke on the spot based on someone he just met shows the talent and versatility of a true comedian.

His jokes touched on many subjects, from Barack Obama to match.com. He was able to take some otherwise uncomfortable subjects and make them hilarious, with the crowd roaring on his particular take on them.

Without giving too much of the routine away, I will say that Rawlings is one of the most funny comedians I’ve seen touch on subjects like picking up white women at the farmer’s market and how we are sooooo glad to not have a slave accent anymore. The whole routine was sidesplitting and hysterical, but you’ve got to see it for yourself!

With a rap sheet like Rawlings’ and sold out shows like this one at the Improv, it’s safe to say his success is more than just an overnight one.

You can catch Rawlings on upcoming tour dates all around the country including Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina, and you can catch him back in the Bay early next year.

If you still can’t get enough Donnell, make sure you catch him on “Guy Code” and the new show “Guy Court” coming this fall On MTV2.
